HORSES

This is my favorite kind of horse. It's a Mustang. They came from Spain in the 16th century and a lot of them were abandoned by the Spanish so the horses became wild. Some American Indians started using them for their own horses and that's how so many Mustangs became Indian horses.

My favorite movie is about a Mustang, called Spirit. Spirit's a really brave horse who helps save his herd from the railroad by destroying a steam engine! He makes a friend of an Indian boy called Little Creek. It's a great movie. You should definitely watch it.

This is also my favorite horse. It's called a Pinto Horse. They're also used a lot by American Indians. In the movie Spirit, Spirit's girlfriend is a pretty pinto pony called Rain. She's a palomino pinto, which means she's white and blonde. She has an eagle feather in her hair because she belongs to Little Creek, but at the end of the movie, Little Creek lets her go free and she goes with Spirit back to where his herd lives.

This is an Appaloosa. They're also Indian horses. I like them because they have spots on their bottoms. Appaloosas come in lots of different colors. This spring, I got to meet an Appaloosa that was grey and white. Momma says that kind of coloring is called a dapple and she says that lots of Arabian horses are that color.
